Linkage Level Descriptions

Initial Precursor

The student can identify an object by its descriptor or provide a descriptor for the object.

Distal Precursor

The student can identify differences in meaning when provided with opposite-meaning words.

Proximal Precursor

The student can determine multiple meanings of a word relative to different contexts in which that word is used.

Target

Given a sentence from a narrative, the student can identify how the overall meaning of the story is influenced by the author's choice of words.

Successor

The student can use embedded textual strategies like restatement, examples, and cause/effect to determine the meaning of a word in context and can also identify how word choice changes the meaning of the story.
