ELA.EE.RI.7.4: Determine how words or phrases are used to persuade or inform a text.

Grade Level Standard

This is aligned the following California State Standards:

  • RI.7.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone. (See grade 7 Language standards 4-6 for additional expectations.) CA

Linkage Level Descriptions

Initial Precursor

The student can identify an object by its descriptor or provide a descriptor for the object.

Distal Precursor

After reading or hearing a short text, the student can recognize that the literal meaning of a word or phrase is the meaning directly stated in the sentence.

Proximal Precursor

The student understands that the context in which an unknown phrase is presented can provide clues to help determine its meaning. The student can use the context surrounding an unknown phrase to determine its meaning.

Target

The student recognizes that word choices can be used to persuade or inform the reader. After reading or hearing an informational text, the student can determine how word choice is used to persuade or inform the reader.

Successor

After reading or hearing a text, the student can identify the commonly understood cultural and/or emotional meaning of words and phrases in the text.
