ELA.EE.L.8.5.a: Demonstrate understanding of the use of multiple meaning words.

Grade Level Standard

This is aligned the following California State Standards:

  • L.8.5 - Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. a. Interpret figures of speech (e.g. verbal irony, puns) in context. b. Use the relationship between particular words to better understand each of the words. c. Distinguish among the connotations (associations) of words with similar denotations (definitions) (e.g., bullheaded, willful, firm, persistent, resolute).

Initial Precursor

The student can identify an object by its descriptor or provide a descriptor for the object.

Distal Precursor

When reading a short text, the student can recognize that the literal meaning of a word or phrase is the meaning directly stated in the sentence.

Proximal Precursor

The student can identify a singular meaning of a multiple-meaning word using contextual and textual clues.

Target

The student can identify more than one meaning of a multiple-meaning word when given limited examples that contain the word.

Successor

The student can identify the intended meaning of multiple-meaning words.
